== Background ==
Ansara was born in the United States,〔National Library of Australia, Interview with Martha Ansara, filmmaker, cinematographer and former Communist (recording ) / Wendy Lowenstein, 1993 http://catalogue.nla.gov.au/Record/2084582〕 where her father was a leading figure in the Syrian-Lebanese community and her mother an educator specializing in dyslexia. She migrated to Australia in 1969, becoming involved in the Sydney Filmmakers Co-operative,〔''Don't Shoot Darling!: Women's independent filmmaking in Australia''(1987), edited by Annette Blonski, Barbara Creed, Freda Freiberg Greenhouse Publications, ISBN 0864360584 http://books.google.com.au/books?id=4Obq66VX1LcC&pg=PA180&lpg=PA180&dq=sydney+film+makers+martha+ansara&source=bl&ots=C2LuBHJ-Vq&sig=PMXlJd0dxp8x9_AA_I98D2bbLeI&hl=en&sa=X&ei=wnBmT4rYJY3HmQWv0cSTCA&ved=0CFQQ6AEwBg#v=onepage&q=sydney%20film%20makers%20martha%20ansara&f=false〕 the peace and women's liberation movements and in the vibrant political Left of that period.〔'Vietnam and the women's liberation movement', ''Green Left Weekly'', 26 April 1995, http://www.greenleft.org.au/node/9470〕 She started making films with other young filmmakers through the Co-operative, but was unable to break into the then male-only domain of professional cinematography. However, in 1975, following the birth of her second child, she was admitted as a student in the first three-year full-time course of the Australian Film, Radio and Television School,〔'World of conveyer belt women', ''Sydney Morning Herald'', 11 October 1977 (refers to Ansara as a student at AFTS) http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1301&dat=19771011&id=drdjAAAAIBAJ&sjid=fuYDAAAAIBAJ&pg=2480,3798385〕 directed by Professor Jerzy Toeplitz〔Australian Film Television and Radio School http://www.aftrs.edu.au/explore/library/library-services/jerzy-toeplitz.aspx〕 and Head of Program, Storry Walton. There she studied cinematography under Bill Constable and Brian Probyn BSC, working with a group of students which included many filmmakers later to make their mark in Australia and overseas.
After graduating, Ansara gained experience as a camera assistant and starting worked as a cinematographer and maker of social documentaries. She began writing reviews and articles on film for ''Filmnews'', the monthly newspaper of the Sydney Filmmakers Co-operative, and then for a range of publications. She organized and taught in the women's film workshops of this period, eventually lecturing in film production at tertiary institutions and conducting short courses in filmmaking throughout Australia. She also worked extensively as an assessor of projects for government film bodies and was involved in promoting the development of women's filmmaking through the Sydney Women's Film Group〔'The experimental practice of history in the filmwork of Jeni Thornley', Screening the Past http://www.latrobe.edu.au/screeningthepast/firstrelease/fir598/FCfr3a2.htm〕 and the Women's Film Fund of the Australian Film Commission.〔Ronin Films website, Martha Ansara profile http://www.roninfilms.com.au/person/1635/martha-ansara.html〕
A resident of Sydney's inner west, she is the mother of three children, including Australian actor Alice Ansara.
